Join us for a fascinating Home-Education Day as we step into the world of the famous Chillingham Wild Cattle and discover what life is really like for one of Britain’s rarest animals.

What does a Wild Cow do all day? How does she survive? How does she raise her young? And what role does she play in the landscape around her?

Designed for curious home-educated children who enjoy asking questions and learning through real-life experiences, this is a relaxed day of outdoor exploration in one of Britain’s most extraordinary landscapes.

• Observe the Wild Cattle in their natural habitat
• Explore the Wild Cattle Park with a small group
• Discover what makes the Chillingham Wild Cattle so unique
• Hands-on activities, games and investigations
• Learn about the wildlife that lives alongside the herd
• Plenty of opportunities to ask questions and explore

As places are fully funded and limited to a small group, we kindly ask that you only book if you are confident that you can attend. If your plans change, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can offer your place to another family.

Ages

Suitable for home educated children aged 7–14 years

All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult throughout the day

Lunch

Please bring a packed lunch and drinks. We’ll stop at the Pavilion around midday for lunch before returning to the Wild Cattle Park for the afternoon.

Facilities

Toilets and handwashing facilities are available at the Pavilion. Hot drinks, cold drinks and snacks are available to purchase during the lunch break.

Walking

Most of the day will be spent exploring the Wild Cattle Park. The route includes uneven ground, rough grassland and some gentle slopes. Children should be comfortable walking short distances over the course of the day.

Weather

All sessions take place outdoors. Safety is always our priority, and we will assess weather conditions ahead of the event. If conditions are unsafe (for example due to high winds or severe weather), we may need to cancel the session.

Cancellations by us

If we have to cancel the event for any reason, we will notify all participants as soon as possible.

Booking & Cancellations

This event has been made possible through external funding and places are limited to just 10 children.

Please only book a place if you are reasonably certain that you can attend. If you are no longer able to attend, we ask that you let us know as soon as possible so that your place can be offered to another child.

A waiting list will operate once all places have been allocated.

Photography & Video

Photos and short videos may be taken during the session for use on our website, social media and other promotional materials for Wildling Woods and the Chillingham Wild Cattle Association.

If you would prefer your child not to appear in photographs, please let us know before the session begins.

Allergies & Medical Needs

Sessions take place in a natural outdoor environment. Parents and carers remain responsible for managing their child’s medical needs at all times.

Please inform us of any allergies or medical considerations before the event so we can support you and adapt activities where possible.

Accessibility

The session takes place primarily within the Wild Cattle Park. Terrain includes uneven ground, rough grassland, mud and gentle slopes.

If you or your child have any mobility considerations, please get in touch before booking. We’re always happy to discuss whether the session is suitable.

General Safety & Supervision

All children must be accompanied by a responsible parent or carer throughout the session. The accompanying adult remains responsible for their child’s safety and wellbeing at all times.

We carry out thorough risk assessments and regularly inspect our equipment. At least one qualified first aider will be present throughout the day with a fully stocked first aid kit.

This session takes place within the Wild Cattle Park, where the Chillingham Wild Cattle roam freely. We will always maintain a safe distance from the cattle, and the session will be led by an experienced member of staff trained in working safely around them. Participants must follow all instructions given by staff at all times.

The Wild Cattle Park is a natural environment and includes inherent risks such as uneven ground, tree roots, low branches, stinging plants, insects and changing weather conditions.

By attending, you acknowledge that while every reasonable precaution is taken to provide a safe and enjoyable experience, a completely risk-free environment cannot be guaranteed.
