OCTOBER AT CHILLINGHAM

Along with summer, our visitor season is beginning to draw to a close. October is our final month for standard tours and it is so often the very best month to visit the Park. The Cattle are looking at their best having spent all summer grazing hard. They are in peak condition, with internal and external fat laid down to see them through the winter.

Meanwhile, the trees are beginning to adopt their autumn colours and shed their seeds. Local pheasants will be slipping in to feast on the acorns and beech mast, along with flocks of pigeon. The fungi will also be sprouting all over the place, although we have seen plenty of early growth this year.

It wont be long before the Fallow Bucks are back for the rut. We do have some very fine bucks, with huge sets of antlers. You will be fortunate to see one, but you should certainly hear them. The roar of the bucks coupled with the bellowing of the cattle, rolling through the autumn mists, creates rather a surreal, prehistoric, atmosphere in our ancient Park.

Our last day of tours is the 1st November, but we do do private tours through out the winter. Please call us to arrange 01668 215250
