Sir Ralph Grey’s magnificent tomb lies in Saint Peter’s Church, a five minute walk from Chillingham Castle. Above it stands the gloriously serene, alabaster carved figures dated 1440.
Sir Ralph Grey famously had his only son condemned to death; Chillingham Castle is home to the actual documentation for the trial. At first he was ordered to be hanged drawn and quartered! Luckily (or maybe not so luckily) his sentence was reduced to merely having his head chopped off.
